Laura Johnston

Deputy Manager
I have worked in childcare for 8 years. Starting my career in 2014 in a school setting , then getting a position as a nursery assistant, at petite feet, in 2019. I started my journey in the toddler room then I helped run the pre-school room at church Road. From then I have worked my way up to deputy manager. I am currently at the second branch in Mayfield where I’m loving every moment.

My favourite part of my job is how each day is very different. I love to hear everyone’s ideas and then to see the excitement on the children’s faces when the ideas become a reality.

I hold a level 5 qualification in health and social care, I am a designated child protection officer, I also have level 2 food and hygiene, paediatric first aid, autism and challenging behaviour management certificates along with 5 years of working with SEN children.

In my spare time I enjoying spending time with my family. Having family days out with the kids and then chilling out on the sofa with my little dog in the evening.

I always tell my own children at home “it’s nice to be nice”. I follow this and believe spreading kindness when you can, is so important.

The Nursery

8 weeks – 2 years

Baby/Infant room provides a wealth of opportunities for movement and exploration at an age where the world around us is most exciting and intriguing. A carefully planned routine providing opportunities to develop physically, expand senses, explore the arts and develop relationships all helps in enabling babies/infants to connect with their environment and others as well as reaching their own personal milestones. The baby/infant rooms are split into two separate rooms with a soothing cot room available for those sleepy babies needing to rest during the busy day. Music and relaxing LED controlled mood lighting helps to create a calming atmosphere.

Babies range from 8 weeks to 12 months with infants from around 12 months to 2 years. Each room will allow for physical movement from sitting up and crawling in babies to walking and running in infants and all of these special moments are celebrated and praised daily by the dedicated baby/infant staff.

Meal times are catered for through all stages of weaning, preferences and allergies and each child is encouraged to experiment and develop that all important ‘feeding themselves’ skill. Nappy changing is carried out in the beautifully decorated separate changing areas with in-built storage for every child’s belongings to keep them safe and children can also have their clothes changed after all the messy fun, outdoor exploration and fun the babies/infants get up to on a daily basis.

2 – 3 years

Toddlers is a busy little ‘hub’ full of activity and fun. From singing to dancing to building to baking and of course getting messy. These little ones are always very active and creative. An important part of the toddler room is a wonderful purpose built sensory area with indoor grass, picket fence and sensory stimulating equipment and lighting. An area important for relaxing and quiet time during a busy day. Toddlers also have a large, spacious outdoor area with all weather grass with age appropriate toys such as climbing frames, slides, ride ons etc. Being so busy it is important that our little ones get all the rest they need so toddlers have a designated rest time where children can recharge and get ready for some afternoon fun.

Toilet training can be a challenging time for any parent but here at Petite Feet we help share the experience by adopting the same routine followed at home. Children are rewarded and guided through toilet training using reward charts, stickers etc and help them move onto the next stage when they feel ready. Child sized toileting facilities as well as nappy changing area is provided in the toddler room with designated handwashing and teeth brushing areas to promote self-care and independence. Getting messy in toddlers is an everyday must. It is all about exploring textures, colours, materials and allowing them to express themselves through messy art. We have a dedicated messy play area that is available to the children throughout the day with activities regularly changed and rotated. There is everything from paint to sand to water to homemade playdough to colouring.

At this age it is important to encourage social interaction and so group time is an important part of the routine. Toddlers do story time, song time, learning of colours and numbers and age appropriate flashcards. We often have visitors to enhance this learning such as Jo Jingles and storytellers to name a few.

3 – School Age
Pre-school is all about encouraging your child to become more independent and use their imagination. The highly trained preschool staff integrate the NI Preschool Curriculum into the daily routine and layout of the room to develop and grow those skills and knowledge needed for starting Primary 1.

Their fun day in preschool includes imaginative role play where the children can become anything from spacemen to doctors to princesses. There is a dedicated role play area where imagination can grow and develop, and the area transforms into a world full of adventure.

Developing friendships and blossoming relationships is at the core of pre-school and so group time helps create these moments. The children learn about colours, numbers, phonics and flashcards in a fun educational way with their friends. Learning is also incorporated through messy play where the children get time to express themselves creatively through art and craft. Preschool have their own messy room where all the fun happens, and children are also able to bring natural materials from outside into the messy room to create their masterpieces as well as paint, homemade play dough, water and sand to name a few.

At this age the pre-schoolers love to get outdoors and explore their surroundings so their outdoor garden area with bikes, scooters and climbing frames is perfect for all that running, jumping and climbing. No matter the weather preschool love getting outdoors so wellies and raincoats are a must in this room. Preschool also get to venture out on nature walks and trips to explore the wider world and learn about the world around us. Being outside has no limits and sometimes pre-schoolers bring their indoors outdoors and have group time and snack time outside in the natural environment.
